Our school mission statement is 'Striving for the future' and we wanted to inspire our children with a wide range of careers. This year we had the full breadth of further education settings so the children could understand the opportunities after Primary School with visitors from high school, college, university and apprenticeships.
Miss Smith, Headteacher, commented “It is an excellent opportunity to inspire a future generation and provide them with varied aspirations for the future as they move onto their next stage of education.” She went on to add “We want to the children to be passionate about their futures, aim high and have an understanding that they can be whatever they want to be!”
The careers fair was supported by a diverse selection of businesses and educational settings including: 24/7 technology, Anwyl, Burscough Priory Academy, Cavendish Nuclear, Churchers Estate Agents, Edge Hill University, Exponential-e, Gatley Plc, Hays Recruitment, Merseyside Fire and Rescue, Northmill Associates, Lancashire Police, Sofology, St John's Ambulance, Tesco, The Lancashire Skills and Employment Hub and West Lancs College.
Over 100 children from Year 5 and Year 6 Burscough Village and Lordsgate Primary School attended the careers fair. The children were provided with an event booklet and had prepared questions giving them the opportunity to talk to the businesses and find out more. Pupils were challenged by the visitors with industry quizzes, guess how many bricks challenges, interior design tasks, retail design software and CPR training. West Lancs college digital department wowed the children with Pepper the Robot who was able to complete a sequence of tasks. A number of businesses were giving away freebies which were very popular with the children.
The children came away with new aspirations with one pupil stating, “After speaking to the fire and rescue team and trying on the equipment I would like to be a firefighter” Another pupil commented, “I now know more about apprenticeships and how I can work and train at the same time when I leave high school”.
The event was organised by Mrs Newsome, School Business Manager, who concluded “My objective was to have a varied range of visitors attending the careers fair to inspire the children. It was amazing to see the children interacting with everyone and asking inspiring and mature questions. We want to thank all the businesses for giving up their morning and being able to provide the children with a vision for the future.
